How To Get a Great Family Portrait

Getting That Great Family Portrait

There is absolutely no better keepsake that is more treasured than the perfect family portrait.  The great thing is that you don’t have to be a professional photographer or really even know a lot about photography to take a great picture, although the professionals like the photographers of JayLynn Studio’s really do know what they are doing!  It never hurts to have a few good portrait tips, in the event you get the urge to try it yourself.

A Different Perspective of The Family Portrait

Family portraits are great because they can be used for so many different things like holiday cards, and wall décor.  They are a great way to mark the growth of your family from year to year as well.  You want to make sure that you ensure that your portraits look as great as they possibly can, while it may take a little extra preparation, here are a few tips that may help make your family portraits as stunning and memorable as possible:

Convey A Loving Memory, Not Awkwardness

Families always convey emotion and love so try to leave awkwardness out of it.  Get them going with some story-telling and take the shots in a familiar setting where they feel at home.  Make sure to position them naturally, no arranging in a contrived manner.  Don’t be afraid to be a little abstract when it comes to height and grouping either.  Place people in different height levels throughout the grouping.  You can even forgo arranging family at all and simply capture action shots such as children playing, couples kissing, sisters hugging their mother, etc.  These are times that really show them doing what they most love to do among family.

Consider Your Composition

Composition can truly turn a simple snapshot into a premium work of art.  Don’t be afraid to zoom in and fill the entire frame with family as opposed to what is behind them in the background.  Shoot at eye level or may just above to give a great view.  There is always extreme angles as well that will give you a very dramatic effect say for instance when shooting directly above kids playing in the grass.

Don’t Worry About What Everyone Wears and What The Background Looks Like

It used to be very common that family portraits meant getting all dressed up wearing stiff and uncomfortable clothes, sitting like a doll while the photographer snapped the portrait (that you didn’t even get to see until it was in print).  Those days are gone and now a days clothes and backgrounds are much more simple.  Maybe take shots of your family against a more solid-color type background like a bright colored wall, or maybe use Mother Nature as the background and capture the brilliance of the blue sky above them or the green grass below them.  Let them dress perhaps within the same color pallet but they certainly don’t have to all dress the same.

Every Day Can Be A Photo Opportunity

There are just so many ways to capture the love of family, and there is no time like the present to maybe start some family portrait customs of your own.  You have a photo opportunity every single day!  It truly does not need to be complicated, even for those who do not know much about photography.  Portrait tips from professionals such as JayLynn Studiosmight just make you the next professional photographer!
