Tips for Taking the Perfect Engagement Photos

Summer is the biggest season for weddings in Utah, which means that now is the time to begin planning for the big day. Whether you were one of the lucky 6 million couples that got engaged on the romantic holiday of Valentine’s Day (the most popular date of the year for proposals), or you had a different engagement date, it’s probably about time for you to start planning your engagement photos. Here are some tips to ensure that you get the best pictures possible.

Scheduling the Perfect Date
Finding the perfect day for an engagement session with JayLynn Studios means working backwards from when you need the photos. If you have time, engagements should be taken at least four to six months before the wedding date so your Salt Lake photographer has time to edit the images and get them to you in time to mail out “Save the Date” cards and/or wedding invitations. If you don’t have that long before your wedding, then just get photos taken as quickly as possible so you aren’t rushed in getting the invitations out.

Finding the Perfect Location
The next step is working with your Salt Lake photographer to pick the perfect place to take the pictures. If you have a specific idea of where you would like to take the pictures, let the photographer know—for example, if you have a favorite date spot, a special place where you and your fiancé like to hang out, or the place where he proposed, those make great memories. If you’re not sure where to go, ask your JayLynn Studios photographer for suggestions. Be sure to choose a place that is accessible (especially since Utah weather can be a little unpredictable during spring time) and convenient so you won’t have any added stress on picture day.

Coordinating Your Clothing
The keyword in discussing what to wear is “coordinating”—which is to say, you should not be dressed like twins. At the same time, don’t go overboard on the colors and patterns (they tend to be distracting), just choose about three colors and make sure one of them is neutral. Find something comfortable and stylish that you can move around in so you can get into all the poses your JayLynn Studios photographer has in mind. Oh, and feel free to accessorize.

Photographing Your Personality
One great way to capture you and your fiancé at your best and get perfect engagement photos is to bring a few props. That might include a favorite blanket, an instrument that you play, or something that reminds you of your love story. You can also incorporate favorite sports teams or some other theme if it is a big part of your life.

The most important part of engagement photos is to relax and have fun. Let your personality shine through, laugh together, and your love will shine through the camera lens.
